Before you connect a toy, check these privacy settings
A practical buying checklist for app permissions, accounts, and control.

The short answer
Check whether an account is required, what permissions the app asks for, how remote access works, and whether the product remains useful without the app. The answers depend on the exact device and software version.
Start before installation
Find the manufacturer's current app listing, privacy policy, and support documentation. Read which company operates the service and how to reach it. An attractive product page should not be the only information available about a connected feature.
Ask what is optional
Is remote control optional? Can the device work without an account or internet connection? Is an email address required? You may prefer fewer connected features, or decide that a particular feature is worth the setup. Make that choice deliberately.
Review permissions in context
Look at requested permissions and the explanation for each. Distinguish permissions required to connect the hardware from optional marketing or analytics settings where the app provides that choice. If a request is unexplained, ask support rather than guessing.
Understand who can control it
Find how an invitation is created, accepted, revoked, and ended. Read what happens if the connection drops. Discuss boundaries with anyone you invite, and check that you can regain control or stop without relying on another person's cooperation.
Plan for the end of use
Before buying, look for account deletion, device reset, data retention, and support information. If you later sell, recycle, or stop using the device, follow the manufacturer's reset and account-removal instructions. This is a purchasing checklist, not a security audit of any brand.
