The short answer
Give the evening one small shared activity and room to talk. An enjoyable date does not need to lead to sex, an expensive dinner, or a perfect photograph.
1 / The two-song swap
Each person chooses two songs: one tied to a memory and one they want the other to hear. Play them in order. The conversation is the activity; you do not have to agree on the music.
2 / The neighborhood detour
Pick a familiar walk and let each person choose a turn. Notice something you normally miss. Check weather, access, and your route home before leaving.
3 / The living-room tasting
Use three things already in your kitchen—tea, chocolate, fruit, or crackers. Give each a ridiculous award. Check allergies and dietary needs first; nobody needs to buy a special kit.
4 / The double-feature pitch
Each person has one minute to pitch a film. Agree on one, put phones aside, and leave ten minutes afterward to talk. Taking turns choosing is a better system than searching for an hour.
5 / The tiny creative challenge
Draw each other without looking at the paper, invent a fictional restaurant menu, or make a playlist for an imaginary road trip. Keep the stakes low and the results gloriously imperfect.
6 / The future postcard
Write a postcard from a trip you might take someday, even if it is only an afternoon away. Compare the details you imagined. End by picking one small part you could actually do this week.
