Does size matter? Start with a better conversation

Preferences, body confidence, and the problem with comparison.

After Hours · October 7, 2026

The short answer

Preferences differ. One measurement cannot tell you what a particular partner values, what feels comfortable, or how satisfied a relationship will be.

Ask what the question really means

“Am I normal?” “Will my partner like my body?” and “Why does this feel uncomfortable?” are different questions. Treating them as one size question can lead to advice that misses the actual concern.

Comparison is not a consultation

ISSM describes body-size satisfaction as influenced by personal, cultural, and psychological factors. A social-media comment, a camera angle, or an anonymous poll is not a useful assessment of your body or your relationship.

Trade predictions for a conversation

An original prompt: “I have been getting in my head about comparison. Can we talk about what helps us feel comfortable and connected?” Ask your actual partner instead of trying to satisfy an imaginary average person.

Keep comfort specific

If the concern is pain, talk about pain rather than treating a measurement as the diagnosis. A qualified clinician can help with persistent symptoms. If distress about appearance is taking up a lot of your attention, you can also ask for support with that distress.

Be careful with guaranteed fixes

A promise to transform your body quickly is not evidence that a product works. Before buying an enhancement product, look for credible evidence about that exact intervention and discuss health-related questions with a clinician. Confidence does not have to start with a purchase.
