Mr. Hobby Aqueous Hobby Color 10ml – Low-Odor Acrylic Paint for Gunpla

  • Low Odor, No Respirator – Alcohol-based acrylic formula safe for indoor desk use without a spray booth or organic-vapor respirator. A ventilated room is recommended for extended sessions.
  • Water Cleanup – Brushes, airbrush cups, and spills wash off with tap water while wet. Once cured, the film is water-resistant and won't reactivate from humidity or handling.
  • Brush-Ready Without Thinning – Formulated to apply straight from the bottle for hand-brushing — most colors reach full coverage in 1-2 coats. Thin 1:1 to 1:1.5 with Aqueous Thinner for spray work.
  • Reformulated in 2019 – Mr. Hobby revised the core acrylic chemistry for the first time in 38 years, delivering stronger gloss, smoother leveling, better film adhesion, and faster dry times.

📝 Product Description

The Aqueous Hobby Color H-series is Mr. Hobby's water-based acrylic paint line, with over 100 colors spanning primaries, metallics, clears, flats, military reference shades (with FS and BS381C callouts), and fluorescents across the H1-H110, H151, H301-H340, and H511-H515 product range.

For modelers building Gunpla in an apartment, painting figures at a desk, or working anywhere a fume-tolerant workspace isn't realistic, this is the line that makes the hobby practical. The 2019 reformulation closed the leveling and gloss gap that older versions had against Tamiya while keeping the brush-friendly consistency Vallejo users expect — one paint line that handles brush work, airbrush work, and both finish types without forcing a compromise.

🎯 Color Selection Guide

H1 White (Gloss) — The foundation color most builders buy first. Base coat for lighter colors and the cleanest white in the range.

H2 Black (Gloss) — The other essential primary. Pre-shading foundation, panel-line base, and the darkest solid available. Pair with H12 for both gloss and matte black on the same build.

H3 Red (Gloss) — Bright primary red matching Tamiya X-7. Accent panels, sports car bodies, warning markings.

H4 Yellow (Gloss) — Primary yellow matching Tamiya X-8 Lemon Yellow. Caution stripes, construction equipment, and yellow mech kits. Needs 2-3 coats over dark surfaces.

H11 Flat White — Pick over H1 when gloss reads too clean. Military aircraft undersides, weathered armor, scale-realistic matte surfaces.

H12 Flat Black — Pick over H2 for tires, rubber components, and exhaust staining where gloss black would look wrong.

H15 Bright Blue (Gloss) — Vivid mid-tone blue, brighter than the deep navy of H5. Mech kit accents and modern subjects.

H16 Yellow Green (Gloss) — Saturated yellow-green for Zaku-style mech kits and nature dioramas.

H20 Flat Clear — Matte clear top coat for sealing decals and killing gloss sheen. Mix 5-10% into a gloss color to convert it to semi-gloss without a separate top coat layer.

H25 Sky Blue (Gloss) — Light sky blue for aircraft undersides, diorama backdrops, and lighter accent work where H15 reads too dark.

H30 Clear (Gloss) — Gloss clear top coat for sealing decals and protecting finished paint. The Aqueous companion to Mr. Color C181.

H33 Russet (Gloss) — Warm reddish-brown that reads as inner-frame metal, aged wood, or leather. One of the most-used colors in the range for mech kit frames and diorama wood-grain.

💡 How to Use

For brush painting, apply straight from the bottle in thin even strokes. Allow 30-60 minutes between coats — the paint dries to the touch quickly but needs time for the film to set before the next layer.

For spray application, thin 1:1 to 1:1.5 with Aqueous Thinner (T110 or T111) and spray at 15-20 psi in 2-3 thin coats. Water can be used as a thinner in a pinch, but Aqueous Thinner produces more consistent flow and dry behavior.

For matte conversion, mix H40 Flat Base into the gloss color before application — 5-10% for semi-gloss, above 15% for full matte. Test on scrap plastic before committing to a full kit.

Cleanup is tap water while the paint is wet; once cured (24-48 hours for full chemical cure) the film requires Mr. Tool Cleaner R or isopropyl alcohol to remove. Do not apply to ABS resin parts — the alcohol solvent can penetrate ABS and cause stress cracking. Check kit instructions for ABS runner identification before painting.
