Mr. Hobby Fine-Grade Primer Spray for Scale Models and Gunpla

  • Finer Than Standard Primer – The 1500 grade uses smaller filler particles than 1000 or 1200 surfacers, producing a smoother foundation that preserves panel lines and molded detail instead of burying them.
  • Three Colors for Three Purposes – Black for metallic and pearl paint bases, gray as the all-purpose neutral, white for bright and vivid color schemes. Pick by what you are painting over it.
  • Reveals Flaws Before Paint – A single light coat exposes seam lines, mold marks, sanding scratches, and putty edges that are invisible on bare plastic. Fix them now rather than discovering them under your final color.
  • Lacquer Bond to Any Paint System – Lacquer primer accepts acrylic, enamel, and lacquer top coats without lifting. The chemical bond grips plastic, resin, and metal surfaces tighter than water-based primers.

📝 Product Description

Mr. Hobby Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 is the fine-grade lacquer primer spray in the Mr. Hobby surfacer lineup — the can modelers reach for after assembly and seam work are done and the kit is ready for its final primed surface before color coats. The aerosol format covers entire kits quickly without airbrush setup, and the lacquer formula bonds to polystyrene, ABS, resin, and metal with a chemical grip that water-based primers cannot match.

🎨 Color Selection Guide

  • Black (B526) – Use under metallic silver, gold, chrome, pearl, candy, gunmetal, and any dark or shadowed paint scheme. Also functions as a standalone flat black finish when a dedicated color coat is not needed. Mr. Hobby notes this is not suitable as a direct base for SM08 Plated Silver NEXT unless the surface is polished or overcoated with gloss black first.
  • Gray (B527) – The all-purpose neutral. Use when you have no strong reason to choose black or white, or when the final scheme includes a mix of light and dark areas. Gray shows surface flaws clearly without biasing the eye toward warm or cool tones.
  • White (B529) – Use under bright colors that lose saturation over dark primers — yellows, reds, oranges, pastels, and skin tones. The standard choice for figure painters and character-model builders working with vivid color palettes.

💡 How to Use

Surface prep: Clean parts before priming — remove dust, sanding residue, fingerprint oils, and mold release agent (especially on resin and garage kits). A quick wipe with isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth handles most contamination. Primer applied over oily or dusty surfaces will orange-peel or lose adhesion.

Spraying technique: Hold the can 15–20cm (6–8 inches) from the model. Apply in light, sweeping passes — start and stop off the edge of the model to avoid pooling at the start point. Two or three thin coats build a more even foundation than one heavy coat. Heavy coats fill panel lines and obscure surface detail.

Dry and cure time: Touch-dry in 15–20 minutes. For light sanding or polishing, wait at least one hour. For applying final color coats, wait 12–24 hours for full cure. Sanding between primer coats with 1500–2000 grit produces a glass-smooth surface for automotive and aircraft builds where finish quality is the showcase.

Ventilation warning: This is a lacquer-based aerosol. The fumes are not casual paint smell — use outdoors, in a booth, or near strong exhaust ventilation. Wear a respirator rated for organic vapors during extended sessions.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 1000, 1200, and 1500 surfacer?
The number refers to filler particle fineness. 1000 has the coarsest particles — better for filling scratches and seams during construction. 1200 is a middle ground. 1500 is the finest — meant for the last priming pass before paint, preserving detail while giving the smoothest possible surface. Many builders use 1000 early in the build and 1500 as the final primer.

Can I use this on 3D-printed resin parts?
Yes. Wash resin parts in warm soapy water first to remove uncured residue and release agents, dry completely, then prime. The lacquer formula bonds well to most hobby resins. For FDM prints with visible layer lines, use 500 or 1000 surfacer first to fill the lines, then finish with 1500.

Can I spray acrylic or enamel paint over this?
Yes. The reverse is the concern — do not spray lacquer primer over uncured acrylic or enamel, as the lacquer solvent will lift the underlying layer. As long as you prime first and paint on top, acrylic, enamel, and lacquer top coats all adhere without issues.
