The short answer

Hand wash a classic C.C. cable-knit beanie and lay it flat to dry. Check the care label on your own hat before starting, especially if it has a lining, pom-pom, trim or a different style number.

Check the hat before you fill the sink

Look inside for the style and care label. A C.C. logo on the outside does not establish that two hats have identical construction or washing instructions. These steps suit the classic unlined C.C. cable-knit beanie. Follow your own hat’s label if it calls for different care.

Before getting the hat wet, take a quick photo of its shape on a flat surface. Note how the opening lies and where you normally fold the edge. This gives you a useful reference when reshaping it later, without guessing whether you have stretched it.

A gentle hand-washing routine

  1. Prepare a clean basin. Use the water temperature on the care label and a mild laundry detergent suitable for hand washing. Follow the detergent’s dosing directions.
  2. Move the hat gently through the water. Avoid vigorous rubbing, twisting or pulling on the opening. Allow a brief soak if the label permits.
  3. Rinse with clean water. Gently press the knit to release detergent. Replace the rinse water until the suds are gone.
  4. Remove water without wringing. Support the hat, press gently, then roll it in a clean towel to absorb moisture.
  5. Reshape and dry flat. Arrange it in its normal shape on a fresh dry towel. Turn it periodically so both sides can dry.

Can a C.C. beanie go in the washer or dryer?

For the classic cable-knit style, stick to hand washing and flat drying. A delicate machine cycle can still move and pull the knit, and tumble drying does not follow its care instructions.

If another C.C. hat’s label explicitly permits machine washing, follow that label for that hat. “Acrylic” alone is not enough information to override instructions for the finished item, which also includes its stitching and trim.

What to check before wearing it again

  • Is it fully dry? Check inside and along folded or thicker areas before putting it in a drawer or bag. There is no reliable one-size-fits-all drying time.
  • Does the shape look familiar? Compare it with your photo rather than pulling the damp opening to fit your head.
  • Does it still need cleaning? If a mark remains, identify the stain before adding a stronger treatment. Do not copy a baseball-cap stain recipe onto a different knit and trim without checking suitability.

If the hat was already stretched or misshapen, treat washing as cleaning rather than a guaranteed repair. A hot-water or dryer experiment is not a dependable way to select a smaller hat size.

Caring for a lined beanie

A lining, pom-pom or trim can change how a hat needs to be cleaned. Check those details before using the same routine on another style. If you are choosing between styles for winter, our cable-knit vs. sherpa-lined beanie guide explains the differences.
