Sources & how we build these charts

Box office: Box Office Mojo’s monthly domestic chart, ranked by theatrical earnings during September 2026. Netflix: Happibee’s rollup of Netflix’s published global weekly Top 10 data, combining English and non-English charts. We sum reported views for weeks ending 2026-09-06, 2026-09-13, 2026-09-20, 2026-09-27; these weeks can cross calendar-month boundaries. Weeks outside the Top 10 are uncounted. Seasons are ranked separately. These are chart-week totals, not unique viewers or an official Netflix monthly chart.

START WITH A FEELING

What kind of
night is this?

A few familiar starting points, chosen for the mood. Spoiler-free, always.

FOLLOW THE CLUES

Knives Out (2019)

A country house, a complicated family, and a detective who keeps asking one more question.

WATCH SMARTER

The questions
between the credits.

Where to watch, what order to choose, and how to make the whole evening work better.

01Where can I watch a movie without adding another subscription?

Start with the title, then check the services you already pay for.

Search the exact title and year in a US availability finder. A subscription, a rental and a purchase are different offers—even when they appear in the same app. Open the provider’s own listing before you pay, and check whether the title is included in your plan. Free services may carry ads; library services depend on your library’s collection and borrowing limits. If you only want one movie, compare a single rental with the full cost of a new monthly subscription. Check the rental’s start-by deadline and viewing window before pressing play.

02Release order or chronological order?

For a first watch, release order is usually the simplest starting point.

Release order lets introductions, reveals and callbacks unfold as the filmmakers originally presented them. Chronological order can be fun on a rewatch, but a prequel may assume that you already know a later story. For a long franchise, first decide whether you want the main films, every spin-off, or a single character’s story. Keep that scope small enough to enjoy. Watch guides should name the exact titles and years, separate optional entries, and mark spoilers before discussing a reveal. There is no need to turn an evening into homework.

03How do I choose a movie for family night?

Read the reason for the rating, not just the letter.

Two films with the same rating can feel very different. Look at the content descriptors for language, violence, frightening scenes and sexual content. Consider the particular child: a loud chase may be exciting for one viewer and overwhelming for another. Watch an official trailer yourself first, then choose a comfortable volume and leave room to pause. A familiar film can be a better shared evening than the newest release. For US films, the MPA’s rating guide explains the categories and the information parents can use to make their own choice.

04Why is dialogue quiet but action so loud?

Try the sound settings before turning the whole room up.

Films often use a wide difference between quiet speech and loud effects. Look for a dialogue, speech, night or reduced-dynamic-range setting on your TV, streaming device or soundbar; the names depend on the model. Check that the selected audio output matches your actual speakers. A surround configuration sent to the wrong setup can make voices harder to follow. Change one setting at a time and replay a short scene. Captions are also a useful viewing option, whether you are keeping the volume low or following unfamiliar names.

05What do streaming “views” actually mean?

A view metric is not the same thing as a person.

Netflix calculates views by dividing hours viewed by a title’s runtime. Our monthly Netflix lists add the reported views from its weekly global Top 10 charts for weeks ending in the selected month. English and non-English lists are combined, and seasons remain separate. A title’s weeks outside the Top 10 are not included. These lists show strong performance in published charts, not a census of everything watched or an all-platform ranking. Box-office earnings are a separate measure: money earned at theaters during the month. Neither measure tells you which title you will enjoy most.

MAKE IT A RITUAL

The best seat
is yours.

Pick the film before the popcorn. Dim the lamp, charge the remote, and put everyone’s phones somewhere else.

  1. Set the mood. A softer light and a comfortable volume go a long way.
  2. Keep food simple. Popcorn, a snack board, and drinks within reach.
  3. Leave time after. The conversation is part of the night.
