Athletic Underwear for Men: What to Wear for the Gym, Running & HIIT

Choose workout underwear around fit, movement and fabric. Compare four SAXX styles, then use a simple running, lifting and HIIT fit check before buying.

You should be thinking about the next set or the next mile, not adjusting your underwear. Start with the pair’s intended use, then check how it behaves through the movements in your workout.

Among the four SAXX styles below, Multi-Sport Mesh is the clearest starting point for dedicated training: SAXX lists it as a performance boxer brief with quick-drying mesh and its more supportive BallPark Pouch PRO. That makes it a sensible shortlist choice for running or HIIT; your fit check still matters.

Start with your workout

  • Running: try a few strides and high-knee steps in your usual shorts. Notice whether the legs move upward or a seam repeatedly catches the same spot.
  • Lifting: squat, hinge and lunge. Check that the waistband stays comfortable and the fabric allows your full range of movement.
  • HIIT: combine a squat, a jump and a lateral step. A pair that feels fine standing still can behave differently when you change direction.

Use those observations to decide what needs changing: cut, size, leg length or support. Buying a tighter pair by default can simply trade bunching for pressure. Start from the size chart for the exact item and check the retailer’s try-on and return terms.

Four SAXX styles, four different starting points

The comparison below uses SAXX’s published product descriptions and Happibee’s catalog model references. It is a buying guide based on specifications.

What to compare before choosing a pair
Style Verified distinction Your decision
Multi-Sport Mesh SXBB75F: performance mesh, 88% polyester and 12% elastane. SAXX lists moisture wicking, quick drying and BallPark Pouch PRO. Start here when exercise is the main reason for buying the pair.
DropTemp Cooling Cotton SXBB86F: cotton/modal blend, listed as 57% cotton, 38% modal and 5% elastane. SAXX positions it for everyday wear with evaporative cooling technology. Compare it if you prefer a cotton/modal fabric. “Cooling” alone does not establish how it will feel during your workout.
Daytripper Comfort Stretch SXBB11F: everyday stretch underwear with moisture-wicking fabric. SAXX has sold different versions under this style name. Consider it for everyday movement; check the specific pair’s label for fabric and inseam before comparing generations.
Vibe Xtra Soft Comfort SXVX24F: SAXX’s softness-focused style, with 95% viscose and 5% elastane in the main fabric. Compare it when everyday softness is your priority, then use the movement checks above for your gym routine.

Read the construction, then check the fit

A fabric percentage answers what a pair is made from. It does not tell you how the waistband feels on your body or whether the leg opening stays where you want it. Compare three things before choosing:

  1. Coverage: note where your current pair’s leg opening sits. If it moves during exercise, compare another cut or inseam rather than treating one length as universally best.
  2. Support: Multi-Sport Mesh uses SAXX’s PRO pouch, which the brand describes as a snugger, more supportive fit for active use. Decide whether that closer feel suits you.
  3. Layers: test the underwear with the shorts or leggings you actually train in. If your shorts have a liner, assess the complete combination for bunching and comfortable movement.

For the SXBB75F Multi-Sport Mesh, SAXX lists a 6-inch inseam and a fly opening. Do not assume that another SAXX model, older pair or multipack has the same measurements simply because the product name is familiar.

A practical first purchase

Choose one pair around the problem you want to solve: fabric staying damp, legs shifting, a waistband that digs in or support that feels too loose. Write down what you notice during a normal session before buying multiples. Keep the fit you like; change the specific feature that is getting in your way.
