Embroidery Needle Sizes: Choose a Pack Without the Guesswork

A mixed needle pack can be a useful little toolkit for hand embroidery—as long as you know what is inside. Start with your pattern’s needle and thread instructions, then compare the pack contents rather than choosing by the largest number on the label.

A bigger number means a finer needle
Within DMC’s embroidery needle range, sizes run from 1 to 10, with 10 the finest. These needles have sharp points and elongated eyes for threading embroidery floss. Keep the needle type alongside its number when making a shopping note.
Compare the pack, not just the strand count
DMC lists three mixed assortments:
- 1765U/1: 12 needles in sizes 1, 3 and 5; its Mouliné Spécial guidance covers 2–6 strands.
- 1765U/2: 16 needles in sizes 3, 5, 7 and 9; its guidance covers 1–4 strands.
- 1765U/3: 16 needles in sizes 5, 7, 9 and 10; its guidance covers 1–2 strands.
Those are recommendations for the assortments. They do not assign one exact needle size to every strand count. Notice that the ranges overlap: two strands appear in all three. A pattern that specifies size 9 gives you a more precise shopping check than strand count alone.
Keep the useful information after opening
Our suggestion is to keep the packaging with your needle book and label separate sections by needle type and size. If individual sizes are not identified, keep that assortment together under its pack reference instead of guessing numbers from appearance.
For a new project, write three things on a small card: fabric, thread and strand count, and the needle specified by the pattern. Add the pack reference if you are still choosing among its sizes. Once you find a combination you like, that note makes it easier to return to the project—or buy a replacement without starting the comparison again.
