What to pack for a day hike

Build a small kit around the route, the weather and a delayed return.

Pack around the Ten Essentials: navigation, sun protection, insulation, light, first aid, fire-starting supplies where appropriate, repair tools, food, water and emergency shelter. Adjust the kit to your route and conditions.

Make the route concrete

Write down where you will start, how far you intend to go, and when you will turn around. Share the plan and expected return time with someone. Download your map before leaving service.

Pack for the unplanned pause

Include extra food, layers and a working headlamp. A phone battery is not a substitute for every other essential. Plan water for the route and conditions; do not assume a stream or tap will be available.

Check the details that change

Read the land manager’s current alerts, weather and route information. Distance alone does not describe a hike: elevation, footing and exposure matter. Choose something that suits everyone in the group.

Use the checklist as a start

The interactive checklist on the Outdoors & Adventure page tracks items you have checked. It is not an assessment that a trip is safe or that the kit is complete for every outing.
