AK Interactive 60ml Waterborne Acrylic Varnish for Scale Models, Miniatures, and Figure Painting

  • The Complete Clear Coat Workflow in One Line – Scale modeling uses a specific sequence of varnishes: gloss before decals to prevent silvering, gloss again to seal decals before a panel line wash, then matte or satin for the final finish. This 60ml line covers every stage of that workflow at the most affordable price point in AK's catalog, letting modelers stock the full clear-coat sequence without buying three separate premium bottles.
  • Airbrush-First Formulation – Each finish is formulated for direct airbrush application without thinning in most cases — a meaningful advantage over competitor varnishes that require mixing with thinner before every use. For denser coverage or tighter control, thin with AK-712 Acrylic Thinner or distilled water.
  • Odorless and Indoor-Safe – Water-soluble formula with no solvent smell. Safe for kitchen-table modeling, apartment workbenches, and any painting environment without a dedicated spray booth or respirator. Cleans up with water during application.
  • 60ml Standard Size at Entry-Level Pricing – AK's standard 60ml dropper format is the most affordable way to enter the AK varnish line — priced below the 100ml 3rd Generation varnishes for modelers who prefer smaller bottles or want to sample each finish before committing to a larger format. Same waterborne acrylic chemistry, same application process, thinned with AK-712.

📝 Product Description

A scale model isn't finished when the paint dries — it's finished when the clear coat seals everything underneath. The AK Interactive 60ml Acrylic Varnish line delivers three essential finishes that every modeler uses at different stages of a build: Matte for the final non-reflective surface on weathered armor and historical figures, Satin for the subtle sheen on leather, rubber, and uniform details, and Gloss for decal preparation and panel-line wash work.

This is AK's standard 60ml dropper format — their most affordable varnish line, positioned below the larger 100ml 3rd Generation varnishes for modelers who want a smaller bottle or a lower per-unit cost. The waterborne acrylic formulation applies directly from the bottle through an airbrush or with a soft brush, and thins with AK-712 Acrylic Thinner when heavier dilution is required. All three finishes share the same non-toxic, odorless chemistry — safe for indoor application and compatible with acrylic, enamel, and lacquer paints once the underlying layers are fully cured.

🎯 Finish Selection Guide

Each finish is available as a variant — select the one that matches your current workflow stage in the dropdown above. Most modelers eventually keep all three on hand because the clear-coat sequence uses each at different points in a build.

  • AK190 – Matte Varnish: Dead-flat final finish for weathered armor, historical figures, matte camouflage schemes, and any subject that should photograph non-reflective under display lighting. The standard final-coat choice when the model is fully weathered and ready for display.
  • AK191 – Satin Varnish: Subtle sheen between matte and gloss. Use on leather equipment, rubber tires, wood stocks, uniform details, and anything that reads as slightly polished without looking wet. Also works as a compromise final coat for modelers who find pure matte too flat and full gloss too shiny.
  • AK192 – Gloss Varnish: High-sheen surface for two specific workflow steps — preparing a model for decal application (prevents decal silvering) and preparing a model for panel-line wash (lets the wash flow into recesses and wipe cleanly off raised surfaces). Also the correct final coat for inherently glossy subjects like fuel tanks, show cars, and display vehicles.

💡 How to Use

Shake the bottle thoroughly before use. Apply over fully cured paint — for the gloss/decal/wash/matte workflow, allow each stage to cure fully before moving to the next. For direct airbrush application, spray at low pressure in multiple light passes rather than one heavy coat. For brush application, dip lightly and apply in thin even strokes in a single direction without overworking. If thinning is needed, use AK-712 Acrylic Thinner or distilled water — avoid isopropyl alcohol and solvent-based thinners, which are incompatible with this waterborne formula. Allow 12 hours for complete cure before handling or masking. Clean brushes and airbrush with water immediately after use to prevent residue buildup.
