Switch Sports Resort: Check Your Controllers Before Game Night

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort arrived on October 22 with 12 motion-control sports. Before inviting everyone over, make three decisions: which system you will use, which sports you want to play and whether your group will be in the same room or online.

Check the system, then the controllers
Nintendo’s product page lists Sports Resort exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. The familiar Switch name does not make this an original-Switch release.
Keep older controllers on your checklist, though. Nintendo’s launch guide says existing Joy-Con controllers work in most cases, while Skateboarding requires Joy-Con 2. Choose your opening sports before deciding whether to buy extra controllers. “We own four controllers” is less useful than knowing which ones suit the games you want to play.
Choose the kind of gathering
- Everyone at home: Nintendo lists offline play for up to four people on one Switch 2. Additional accessories may be needed; check the chosen sport’s setup before promising everyone a simultaneous place.
- Friends joining remotely: Friend Lobby supports up to eight players, with up to two on each system. Online features require a Nintendo Account, internet access and Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- A solo evening: Island Crown focuses on single-player challenges across nine sports. That is a different starting point from arranging a group match.
Make a three-line game-night note
Our suggestion: write first sport, people and systems, and controllers ready on one small checklist. Start with the sport your group is most curious about, confirm its requirements, then choose a second option that fits the same setup. Move furniture and loose objects out of the playing area, leave room around each player and wear wrist straps.
If you want to try online play, Nintendo’s launch offer includes a seven-day trial for eligible accounts, including some that have tried it before. Active Individual or Family Membership accounts cannot redeem it, and it does not apply to Expansion Pack membership. The trial converts to a paid monthly membership unless canceled. Check those terms before choosing it for a one-night gathering.
