Choose Mr. Surfacer 500 if: your builds need real repair. The coarse grade is closest to a true liquid putty, packing deep seams, joint gaps, and damaged surfaces in fewer applications. It's also the modeler's texture bottle, stippled on for cast-metal and rough-surface effects. It sands longer and lays thicker, so keep it away from fine engraved detail.
Choose Mr. Surfacer 1000 if: you want the all-rounder that most builds start and end with. Fine enough to prime under any finish, thick enough to still erase seams and scratches, and the safe default when you're not sure. If you own one bottle of the whole ladder, own this one.
Choose Mr. Surfacer 1200 if: priming smoothness outranks filling power on your bench. The finest general grade lays the sleekest base, which pays off under gloss colors, metallics, and natural-metal finishes where the paint magnifies whatever sits beneath it. What it fills, it fills lightly; pair it with a coarser grade for the repair stage.
Choose Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 if: you're at the top of the ladder. It's the dedicated finishing product rather than a general grade, with next to no filling ability and the smoothest surface of the family, and it's the only rung sold in grey, black, and white, so your final undercoat doubles as the base shade for the paint above it.
Plenty of benches carry more than one rung: repair with the low number, prime with the high one, and the same thinner and technique serve every grade.

For repairs, brush it directly over the seam, scratch, or sink mark, let it dry fully, then wet-sand level with fine waterproof sandpaper. For priming, thin it with Mr. Color Thinner or Mr. Color Leveling Thinner and spray light coats through an airbrush until the surface reads one even grey. Anything the grey reveals, fix now: another dab, another sand, before color ever touches the kit.
⚠️ Working With Lacquer
This is a lacquer product, and it behaves like one: use it with real ventilation, keep it away from flames and heat, and wear a rated mask when spraying. Cap the bottle promptly, since lacquer thickens as solvent escapes. Adult modelers only.

Bottle or spray can?
Same product, different control. The 40ml bottle is the flexible one: brush it for spot repairs, decide your own thinning ratio, and spray exactly the coat you want through an airbrush. The spray can trades that control for convenience and empties much faster. Builders with an airbrush almost always end up on the bottle.
What do I thin it with?
Mr. Color Thinner or Mr. Color Leveling Thinner, the same lacquer thinners used for Mr. Color paints. Never water and never acrylic thinners; it's a lacquer and only lacquer solvents move it.
Can I paint acrylics over it?
Yes, and that's the classic order of operations: lacquer surfacer down first, then acrylic or enamel color over it. Lacquer under milder paints is safe; the reverse order attacks the paint underneath.
Will it hide panel lines and fine detail?
Grade matters. The 1200 is the gentlest on engraved detail and the 1000 stays safe in normal thin airbrushed coats. The coarse 500 is a filler first and will soften detail it floods, which is exactly what you want on a seam and exactly what you don't on a panel-lined surface. Match the grade to the spot.
