A better brush day: how to clean makeup brushes

The wash, rinse and drying method worth saving for your next brush day.

Illustration of makeup-brush bristles being rinsed under running water over a cream basin.

Wash makeup brushes every 7–10 days, rinse the bristles carefully, and dry them flat with their tips extending past the counter edge. Avoid soaking the entire brush or drying it upright.

Give your brushes a proper reset

Use lukewarm running water to wet the bristle tips. Keep the junction between the bristles and handle out of the stream; repeated soaking can weaken the glue holding the brush together.

Swirl the tips in a bowl of lukewarm water with a little gentle shampoo, then rinse. Repeat until the water runs clear. Gently squeeze out excess moisture with a clean, dry paper towel.

The drying position matters

Lay brushes flat on a towel with the tips extending over the edge of a counter, where air can circulate. Drying brushes upright lets water run toward the handle and glue. Let them dry fully before putting them away.

Keep a second clean brush available if drying time collides with your morning routine. Do not share brushes; cleaning is a routine habit, not a reason to share applicators.
